Columbia breaks 104-year temperature record, faces dramatic weather shift

Columbia experienced a record-breaking high of 82 degrees Tuesday, surpassing a 104-year-old record, with forecasts predicting a dramatic weather shift that could bring snow less than 24 hours later.The previous record of 81 degrees was set in 1921, according to National Weather Service data.

MU names new vice provost for enrollment management

Steve Robinson will be the new vice provost for enrollment management at the University of Missouri this coming academic year, according to a university news release Tuesday.Robinson will succeed Rhonda Gibler, who has served as interim vice provost for the Division of Enrollment Management since August.

Rep. Alford calls to relocate SBA Kansas City office to Columbia

U.S. Rep. Mark Alford, R-Mo, has called for the relocation of the Small Business Administration's regional Kansas City office to Columbia.Alford, the chairperson of the House Small Business Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations and Regulations, sent a letter calling for the move to SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler on Tuesday.

Columbia coffee shops 'wait and see' on tariff impact

In the wake of President Donald Trump’s shifting tariff policies, some Columbia coffee shops are taking a “wait and see” approach, unsure whether there will be price increases that affect their businesses.According to the National Coffee Association, daily coffee consumption is at a 20-year high, up nearly 40%. Some local coffee shop managers think they might be impacted but said prices won’t rise yet.

With cold, windy weather whipping Pride flags around, about 100 LGBTQ+ Columbia residents and allies gathered Saturday outside the Boone County Courthouse to protest the Trump administration and Missouri General Assembly.At the rally, attendees chanted phrases such as "We are here to stay," "Columbia is no place for hate" and "President Trump, shame on you."

MU study finds link between microplastics and commercial fertilizer

An increasingly popular industry fertilizer creates microplastics that leach into soil, according to a study from the MU College of Engineering published in January.Researchers Maryam Salehi, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering for the university, and Farhad Jazaei at the University of Memphis found that polymer-coated controlled-release fertilizers, or PC-CRFs, are environmentally engineered to gradually release nutrients into the soil.

Weather delays Boone County libraries, buses running as normal

Columbia residents should be aware of a cold weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service on Wednesday.National Weather Service Meteorologist Lydia Jaja said the storm total has been 2.8 inches of snow. "So we do have a slight chance of some light snow flurries for your area today, this afternoon." Jaja said.

Columbia teen killed in overnight shooting, arrest made

A teenager from Columbia was killed in a shooting on Clark Lane early Wednesday morning.Kaidynce Payne, 18, was pronounced dead on the scene in the 3200 block of Clark Lane, just east of U.S. 63, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department.

Talia Jackson will be the new president and chief executive officer of Heart of Missouri United Way starting March 3. Heart of Missouri United Way is a nonprofit organization in Columbia serving communities in Boone, Cooper and Howard counties. It aims to fight poverty by making basic needs like education, health care and financial stability more accessible.

Neighborhood revitalization grants open for Columbia residents

Applications for Columbia’s Love Your Block mini-grants opened Friday, giving community members an opportunity to help revitalize their neighborhoods. Residents have until March 21 to apply.Columbia is one of 16 cities across the country to receive Love Your Block mini-grants, which give up to $2,500 to eligible projects aimed at neighborhood improvement.

Great American Cookies and Carter's children's clothes are two new stores joining the Columbia Mall lineup.
